Our branch of the Goldsmith family lived in Portsea for most of the 19th century. Stephen Goldsmith was however born in Sussex, probably in Ferring, and was married in Littlehampton before moving to Portsea between 1806 and 1808.

We are more or less certain that Stephen's parents were John Goldsmith and Mary Batchelor. John's parents were probably John Goldsmith and Hannah Clark.  John and Mary were probably married in Angmering on 18th May, 1780 and they had a son Stephen baptised in Ferring on 19th November, 1780.

Another branch of the Goldsmith family from Stephen's brother George came from Ferring but moved to New Shoreham where they stayed for several generations.
